Finishing reality check

Paper bulk, grain and equipment can change the geometry

Booklet creep, fold compensation and spine thickness are physical-production estimates. Whenever a fold, bind, die or laminator controls the finished piece, record the actual stock caliper and the equipment/vendor specification rather than converting GSM to thickness by assumption.

What the result is useful for

Useful for early cover planning when a printer has not supplied a binding-specific spine formula.

How the calculation works

Leaves = ceil(pages / 2). Estimated text-block thickness = leaves × measured sheet caliper.

What this calculator cannot know

Perfect-bound spine width also depends on compression, adhesive, cover stock and the binder’s process. The production provider’s template controls final cover width.
